A day in Shenzhen. Part 1: Skyscrapers and pretense, with nothing behind it
When visiting Shenzhen for the first time, almost everyone is amazed by the abundance of skyscrapers and the beauty of the paved and well-maintained streets. It's not surprising, as the city is relatively young and was built as a Chinese competitor to Hong Kong. To some extent, it succeeded - the dilapidated and slightly moldy historical center of the island can hardly compete in beauty with the glass giants.
But after just an hour of walking around the city, it becomes clear that there's almost nothing behind the beautiful facade. All these offices are half empty, if not 90% empty. The spaces in them are subleased to everyone from hotels to hair salons and massage parlors. There are hardly any people on the streets, and by evening, the city completely empties out. Half of the restaurants seem to be always closed. Official data says that about 15 million people live in the city. But the eyes tell us that there are only 3-5 million.
It's obvious that a huge amount of money has been poured into the city, but unfortunately, they haven't managed to create a social life here.
