The main downside of Taipei is its poor urban development.
On the internet, they say that this is "how it historically developed", claiming that Taiwan was a poor country 40 years ago, and the goal of urban development was primarily to provide affordable housing, rather than an aesthetically appealing landscape. But of course, I don't buy that. In 30 years, they could have implemented housing safety standards ten times over, banned people from modifying their balconies in the "Dagestan-style", and repainted all this grey, depressing mess into something decent.
But apparently not. The Taiwanese are fine with it. Especially since even such a shack costs a fortune, because Grandpa was lucky enough to live in Taipei. In the end, they have a country with a per capita GDP on par with Korea, but urban development at the level of Thailand.
