Generally, flying without luggage is a pretty cool idea. If you approach what you need for everyday life rationally and what's not a consumable (i.e., you can buy it locally, use it, and throw it away), then all of this can fit into one backpack that fits into your carry-on luggage.
There are many advantages to this - firstly, moving around the city with your belongings is practically hassle-free, and there's no fuss with check-in and check-out.
Secondly, there's no chance of the airline losing your luggage during transit (which happens quite often, by the way), so you're not dependent on the stupidity of airport staff. Of course, there's a risk of losing your backpack yourself, but I think you'll quickly notice the difference of not having 10kg on your back.
Thirdly, you save on tickets and can choose the most expensive ones where luggage isn't included. I've seen flights where the baggage fee is almost +$100.
Fourthly, you can check in for your flight online and go straight to the check-in desk, skipping the often hour-long queues.

Of course, this doesn't work if you're alternating between Africa and Finland and carrying sweaters and jackets instead of shorts and T-shirts. Otherwise, packing everything in one bag is quite feasible.

P.S. I hate those assholes at customs who make you take out your laptop. It happens completely randomly from case to case even in the same airport, and there's no point to it. But you still have to unpack and repack your things.
