"Golden Gai" in Shinjuku is one of the oldest districts of central Tokyo. In history, this tiny piece of land has been home to a black market and a red-light district. In the 80s, the Yakuza carried out pressures and arson attacks here, but now it's a popular micro-bar district for tourists.
The narrow pedestrian streets here are privately owned by the owners of two-story houses, so commercial photography and street noise are prohibited - they can call the police. But foreigners are welcome here, and several dozen tiny bars, literally for 10 people, are always ready to welcome guests. Some do not skimp and charge an entrance fee, but it's worth it for cheaper drinks or the unique atmosphere of the place. Of course, I couldn't pass by and also visited a couple of establishments. I'll talk about the coolest of them in my next posts.
