To start with, some introductory remarks (why I started having doubts almost immediately):

To start with, some introductory remarks (why I started having doubts almost immediately):

1) The listing was on a popular housing rental site, but the price was below market value - 1950 CAD versus an average of ~2200 CAD in the area (but that happens, okay)

2) The "landlord" was communicating via an email from ...@calgaryhealthservices.com, which redirects to the legitimate site albertahealthservices.ca (which makes sense, since Calgary is part of the province of Alberta). I noticed this only after the fact, but by searching the original address online, it's easy to find information about how scammy it is.

Next, I asked the landlord when I could view the apartment, to which I received the above email. At this point, there was no doubt left:

1) The "landlord" didn't answer my question, instead writing a long rambling message and simply asking me to write to him again (maybe he's clueless, let's move on)

2) The "landlord" started sharing personal details, as if who cares + didn't ask + the standard story about a dying mother/daughter/cat

3) The "landlord" of course wasn't in the city and couldn't meet in person to show the apartment. He also didn't hire a real estate agent, even though this is standard practice in Canada

4) The "landlord" talked about a classic rental agreement, but mentioned AirBnB. What's the point of AirBnB here? Why is it needed for a rental?

I stopped continuing the dialogue, as it became obvious that the next step would be a classic scam involving prepayment to a fake PayPal account, and of course, the apartment would never exist.

If this message from this scammer doesn't flash a huge "SCAM" sign for you, I strongly advise you to study this topic before becoming a victim yourself. Personally, I sometimes read the r/scams subreddit, as it's full of such methods.
