On one of the August days, I decided to go to the summer fireworks festival in Yokohama. The fireworks themselves were of course amazing, no doubt, probably the most spectacular I've ever seen in my life, but I want to dedicate this post to something else...
There was literally a transport collapse in the city on this occasion, but it was caused by people. The streets were packed for kilometers from the subway to the waterfront. A few hours before the start, it was almost impossible to get through. According to Japanese traditions and laws, almost everyone was shuffling along the narrow sidewalk, while the police monitored the road to prevent the crowd from wanting to cross the road.
And now imagine that all these people, who had gathered during the day, were simultaneously moving towards the subway right after the end of the festival. In short, it was a complete mess.
But to block off the road, even partially, even for half a day, so that people could move around the city peacefully - that's beyond the intelligence of the local authorities. But it's in line with their level to deploy more police to heckle the crowd of people just trying to get somewhere.
Let me remind you that in neighboring Korea in 2022, 160 people died in a stampede during Halloween. And many blame the police for this. I even wrote a post about it. At the time, I didn't quite understand the connection, but after observing how some people solve problems, the logical chain started to make sense.
