Here, I'd like to say that it's not so important how much housing costs, but rather the price/income ratio in the country.
In Canada, everyone complains that housing is unaffordable for the middle class, and that's true. But the middle class in Canada earns an average of $4,000 after taxes, of which $1,500-2,000 will go towards renting a 50-square-meter apartment in the city center. (We'll set aside family and other desires for now).
In Hong Kong, the middle class earns about $3,500 after taxes due to low taxes, but the same 50-square-meter apartment in the city center will cost around $3,000, which is obviously unaffordable. I'd like to say, "move out of the city center," but as you can understand, there's not much else to move to in Hong Kong.
