The Kamagasaki district is the poorest district in all of Japan.
Once, workers lived here, but over the past 30 years, the demographics have shifted, and now 25,000 elderly people live here, of whom about 1,300 are homeless.
Despite the fact that there are pensions in Japan, they only start paying them at the age of 60-65. Many people finish working on construction sites much earlier than this age, and end up in a pre-retirement trap, having neither a job nor money.
If a person in such a situation has no family, they either have to live in a cheap communal apartment and scrape by by selling recyclable waste, or "camp out" in a tent or even a box.
Of course, such a district is a unique exception in the huge cities of Japan. But poverty exists everywhere, and it's hard to completely overcome it even in the richest countries.
