Another of the ancient engineering creations in #Hamburg - an underground tunnel under the Elbe River.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the cargo port of Hamburg began to expand to the opposite side of the river, and the question arose of how to send workers across the already overloaded shipping strait.

The ferries operating at that time interfered with cargo ships and could not navigate the river during the winter freeze, and the construction of a bridge was expensive and de facto impossible due to the dense urban development.

Therefore, a rather progressive decision was made for that time - to dig a tunnel almost half a kilometer long at a depth of 24 meters. At the same time, it was designed in such a way that transport, delivered underground on huge elevators, could travel in both directions!
And although cars now travel through the new tunnel, the old one continues to play a role in the life of the city, albeit a tourist one.
