And after what seemed like an eternity, I finally got my Schengen visa. The process turned out to be much longer than I expected, and the results weren't exactly impressive.
Initially, back in early April, I estimated that it would take about two months to get a Schengen visa (waiting for an appointment slot + the actual processing), but in the end, I only managed to get an appointment slot for the end of June, and the visa took almost a month to process (from the 27th to the 26th).
The result was a six-month multiple-entry Schengen visa. For France, this is neither too much nor too little - most people get the same amount, and only if you have a unique visa history can you expect something more.
The fees are now huge (about 120 euros at the current exchange rate), and you need to book everything assuming that the consulate doesn't care about your travel dates and can delay issuing the visa for up to 45 days while keeping your passport with them.
In general, my verdict is: only plan a trip to Europe if you're ready to wait several months, have plenty of money, and aren't interested in anything else. Otherwise, it's better to go to Asia. It's cheaper, easier, and just as exciting.
